"Älä ota mitään. Älä ota omenaakaan! (Don't take anything. Don't even take the apple!)"

Here the "even" in the English sentence seems to refer to the verb "take", not the "apple". You usually say things like "Don't even touch the apple "(implying: let alone eat it), whereas the "-kaan" in the Finnish sentences belongs to the apple. If the two sentences belong together a natural way of saying it in English would be "Don't take anything, not even the apple", but I am not sure if that is meant, especially if "Älä ota omenaakaan!" is meant as a stand-alone sentence. --Geoff
