Spanish: Plural Nouns

From UniLang Wiki

Forming a plural noun in spanish is fortunately quite regular. The following rules can be observed:

  • If the singular noun ends in a consonant (including Y), then the plural is usually formed by adding -ES
  • If the singular noun ends in a vowel, then the plural is usually formed by adding -S
  • If the singular noun ends in -Z, then this is dropped and -CES is added.
  • If the singular noun ends in -IÓN, then this is dropped and -IONES is added.

The only words that don't follow this rules are some borrowings from Latin and other languages which already have an s in the singular form. Examples:

la crisis - las crisis

la metátesis - las metátesis
