THE ITALIAN ALPHABET

The Italian alphabet is made up of 21 letters: 5 vowels and 16 consonants.


There are some IPA left and some of which i'm not totally sure....

Letter Name IPA Approximate Sound
a a a Like a in English "father"
b bi b Like b in English "boat"
c ci ʧ When followed by e or i, like ch in English "cherry"


k When followed by a, o, u, or consonant, like c in English "cook",

in particular che, chi is 'ke', 'ki'

d di d Like d in English "dance"
e e e One like a in English "make"


ε One like a in English "met"
f effe f Like f in English "fool"
g gi ʤ
When followed by e or i, like g in English "general"


g When followed by a, o, u, or consonant, like g in English "go"

in particular ghe, ghi are 'ge', 'gi'



ʎ
gl+i, like spanish ll (with some exeptions)


ɲ
gn, always like spanish ñ
h acca
Always silent
i i i Like i in English "machine"




j
Non stressed and followed by a wovel is the semiconsonant

j,
like y in English 'yes'.

l elle l Like l in English "lamb"

n enne n Like n in English "net"

o o o One closed like o in English "note"


ɔ One open like ou in English "ought"
p pi p Like p in English "pot"
q cu k Always followed by u. qu sounds like qu in English "question"
r erre r Like r in English "rubber" with a slight trill
s esse s Like s in English "see"


z Like z in English "zero"

sc+i, sc+e sounds like "sh" in english "shoe"
t ti t Like t in English "table"
u u u Like u in English "rule"


w
When not stressed and followed by a vowel, like w in English "was"
v vu v Like v in English "vain"
z zeta ʦ
Like ts in English "nuts"

Like dz in English "adze"
