Galician noum
From UniLang Wiki
A Galizan noun has, unlike an english noun, gender and number inflection. It can be either masculine or feminine and it can also be either singular or plural.
Spotting Noun Gender
The gender of a noun can in many occasions be deducted from the noun ending, in the remaining cases it can be deduced from the accompanying article (if present) or it will have to be learned by heart.
Masculine are usually...:
- ... ending in -o
- ... ending in a consonant
Feminine are usually...:
- ... ending in -a: ex. palestra, médica
- ... ending in -ción, -ción or -zón: ex. acción, inmersión, salgazón
- ... ending in -dade: ex. liberdade
- ... ending in -axe or -ixe: ex. carraxe or vertixe
- ... ending in -tude: ex. latitude
And nouns with following ending can be either gender, so have to be learned:
- ... -án: ex. man (f.), paspán (m.),
Plural Nouns
The following rules can be observed for making plural nouns out of singular ones:
- If the noun ends in -o, -a or -e, then add -s: ex. campo > campos
- If the noun ends in -s, it does not change: ex. lapis > lapis
- If the noun ends in -al, change this to -ais: ex. chacal > chacais
- If the noun ends in -el, change this to -eis: ex. anel > aneis
- If the noun ends in -ol, change this to -ois: ex. control > controis
- If the noun ends in -il, change this to -ís: candil > candís
- If the noun ends in -án, change this to -ans: man > mans
