Mikä sinun nimesi on? - What is your name?
Minun nimeni on x. - My name is x.
Missä sinä asut? - Where do you live?
Mistä sinä olet kotoisin? - Where are you from?
Kuinka vanha sinä olet? - How old are you?
Minä olen x vuotta vanha. - I am x years old
Kiitos. - Thank you.
Kiitti. - Thanks.
Ole hyvä. - You are welcome. Here you are.
Anteeksi. - I'm sorry. Excuse me.
Olen pahoillani. - I am sorry.
Ei se mitään! - No problem!
Kippis! - Cheers! (drinking toast)
Onneksi olkoon! - Congratulations!
Onnea matkaan! - Good luck! Good luck with that!
Hyvää matkaa! - Have a good journey!
Hauska (/mukava) tutustua! - Nice to meet you!
Hauska (/mukava) nähdä taas! - Nice to see each other again!
Otan osaa. - My condolences.
En vielä puhu suomea kovin hyvin. - I don't speak Finnish very well yet.
Puhuisitko (/puhuisitteko) hitaammin, kiitos? - Could you speak more slowly, please?
Conversational interjections
These are common things you'd hear from the person you're talking to. The translations are NOT literal, instead they try to capture the mood of the interjection. Also note that most of these are obviously for colloquial language only (some of them spelled according to spoken language), not to be used in essays and such. And also, many of these can portray different moods depending on the tone one uses (sarcastic, surprised, etc...).
- These are for basic, pretty neutral agreement
Joo - Yeah
Joo-o - Uh-huh
Aijaa - Oh
Nii - Yeah
Nii-i - Uh-huh
Just joo - I see
Just - I see
- This is for anger or frustation
Joo joo! - Yeah yeah! Whatever!
- These are for surprise (note that the tone is raised on the first syllable, not the last)
Ihan(ko) totta? - Really?
Niinkö? - Is that so?
Nii vai? - Really?
Oikeesti? - Seriously?
- These are for teenagers ;)
No joo! - Well yeah!
No älä! - Duh!
- These are for more expressive agreement
No niinpä onkin - Oh, so it indeed is
Aivan, aivan - Right, right
Näin on - That's true
Totta - That's true
- These are for doubt
No en tiedä... - well I don't know...
En usko... - I don't think so...
Tuskin... - I doubt it...
Ei kai sentään... - surely not...
- These are for definite disagreement
Ei varmasti! - Certainly not!
Ei todellakaan! - Absolutely not!
Ehdottomasti ei! - Absolutely not!
