First to answer Chrystel

Chrystel scrie:My best dictionary (for me) is a serbian one :

FrancuskO-srpski srpsko-francuski rečnik
Vojislav Nikolić

Beograd : Jasen, 2005
867 strana, latinica, tvrdi povez
ISBN 86-85337-07-0
Univerzalan, lako upotrebljiv, sa rečnikom sinonima, kratkom gramatikom francuskog jezika i preciznim definicijama izgovora, dopunjeno ključnim ekonomskim, pravnim i kompjuterskim terminima.

There are about 25 000 words in it (15000 french and 10000 serbian).

I bought it 40 euros, which is rather expensive to me, as it is for my leasure and not for my work. But I really think it is usefull. There is a lot of expressions and examples.

I know that dictionary, but 40 euros is a lot for it  Did you order it online? The dictionary isn't bad, but I wouldn't really call it great either. Don't feel bad because it doesn't have the word iskati, it's dialectal/archaic. (Bad bad voron :D)

I use the French-Serbian dictionary by Ranka E. Marković and the Serbian-French dictionary by Slobodan Jovanović (He also made a French-Serbian one too) They are not really expensive if you buy them here. They do have a lot of expressions.

For the rest, I'd like to know what resources (dictionaries, grammars, coursebooks) you are using to learn BCS. May it be in printed, e-book or online form.

Morton-Benson's "English-SerboCroatian/SerboCroatian-English" one. It's pretty good, but when I was in New York I saw a bigger one that was recently published, this English-Bosnian / Bosnian-English one... I'm dying to lay my hands on it somehow.

If any of you guys over in Serbia comes across a better Serbian-English one than I have, & if there wasn't a way for me to (feasibly) get it online, I'd seriously be interested in paying for someone to send me one... fyi :P

I am using my friend, Net

I have no books yet, though I have ordered one, which by the way was very expensive :( It should be good!

I'll never get such a good offer as I got with my hebrew dictionary - 23$ with porto! 1086 pages... :)
And it even was an Oxford!

Would anyone have a good reference of a French-Croatian dictionary?
The ideal for me would be a french-bosnian one, but I don't think I can find it, apart from in Bosnia.

I insist on the fact that I'm looking for French and Croatian.

@Bolek : thank you very much for the reference you gave but it is a serbian one, and I would like to find an equivalent one in croatian, which should be closer to bosnian.
What do you mean when you say : "They are not really expensive if you buy them here" (in Serbia? I'm afraid I can't go there next week  )

Resources for french people, learning bosnian

Mesajde Chrystel pe Dum 2007-10-07, 9:22

Sorry in advance for this long post once again, but as I am talking about ressources for french people, I have to translate in french...

I posted those messages on another website, but I make a copy-paste, as there is not a lot of ressources on BCS for french, it could interest some Unilang members :

Resources for french people
It is very difficult to find resources about bosnian language on internet. But when you are french, it seems nearly impossible to get some documents.
So I will put there some links or informations about bosnian for french.
My first link is not exactly about bosnian, but it could really help, as crotian and bosnian are not very far :
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croate
To have the description of the declensions in french is very useful, if we don't master perfectly english.

C'est très difficile de trouver des ressources sur la langue bosniaque sur internet. Mais quand vous êtes français, c'est quasiment impossible de trouver quelques documents.
Alors je vais mettre ici quelques liens ou informations sur le bosniaque pour les français.
Mon premier lien n'est pas vraiment sur le bosniaque, mais il peut vraiment aider, comme le croate et le bosniaque ne sont pas très éloigné :
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croate
Avoir la description des cas en français est vraiment très utile, si on ne maitrise pas parfaitement l'anglais.

-----------------------------
Astuce pour trouver un dictionnaire français/bosniaque
To my knowledge, there is no bosnian/french dictionary published in France. I bought a serbian/french dictionnary. I had to order it in a specialized library online. It helped me, but it has some limits, as some words are not written in the same way (dijete in bosnian for dete in serbian for example). I have got an idea, and I hope it will be ok : a bosnian friend of mine is going back in Bosnia for holidays, she will bring me back a bosnian/french dictionnary from Bosnia, as it exists there. You can try this solution if you know someone who go to Bosnia.

--------------------
Utilisation des dictionnaires en ligne
Don't look for a good bosnian/french dictionnary online and free. Nowadays, in 2007, I don't think there is one which is valid and usefull.
But with a little trick it's possible to get some results. I use a lot the dictionary eudict (link below)
http://www.eudict.com/?lang=croeng&word=dijete
with the language pair croatian/english. Don't use the language pair french/croatian, it contains much less words.
Then, if you don't know english, or rather badly, use a second dictionary to translate from english to french.
Example : http://www.lexilogos.com/anglais_langue_dictionnaires.htm
It's a little bit complicated, but it goes not too bad! Keep smiling, it could be worth... :D

Inutile de chercher un bon dictionnaire bosniaque/français en ligne et gratuit. Aujourd'hui, en 2007, je pense qu'il n'y en a pas de valable.
Mais avec un peu d'astuce il est possible de s'en sortir. J'utilise beaucoup le dictionnaire eudict (lien ci-dessous)
http://www.eudict.com/?lang=croeng&word=dijete
en paramétrant la paire de langues croate/anglais. Ne pas utiliser la paire français/croate, elle est beaucoup moins renseignée.
Ensuite si vous ne connaissez pas l'anglais, ou mal, passez par un deuxième dictionnaire pour traduire de l'anglais vers le français.
Exemple : http://www.lexilogos.com/anglais_langue_dictionnaires.htm
C'est un peu compliqué, mais on y arrive! Gardez le sourire, çà pourrait être pire... :D

My ressources nowadays

I first tried to find french ressources for BCS (as I am french). When I understood it was not the right way (almost no ressources), I looked for english ressources.

My first book-course :
- Le serbo-croate sans peine (méthode ASSIMIL) : not bad for those (french) who want to learn serbian, as half of the book is in cyrillic

CD-Rom croatian-french :
- Parlez croate (Talk Now) : really for great beginners, no intermediate level

Classical dictionaries :
- francusko-srpski/srpsko-francuski recnik (Vojislav Nikolic - JACEH) : I thought it was really good, but it seems it is only not bad
- francusko-hrvatski/hrvatsko-francuski recnik (Benini - skoska knjiga) : quite good when you travel I think, but not enough words and expressions.

My grammar ressources :
(totally in english but really high level)
(very good summary in french, but perhaps is there an equivalent in english?)
(it seems complete, but some verbs seem to be no more used)
(I found it recently so I didn't test it)
(it seems interesting but I didn't use it a lot)
(what I use a lot in this moment : good courses and a lot of exercices, with some audio files)

Other exercices :
(interesting but no corrections)

On-line dictionaries :
(croatian : the one I use the most)
(serbian)
(BCS one, one page per letter, so you can find sometimes words even if you don't have the right orthography. But perhaps there is not a lot of words)
- http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx...ize=s;frm=frameset;
(a very old croatian to english one - 1917! - digitalized page per page, same usage than the one before)

Knabo, velika ti hvala za recnike!

I am using quite few resources.

Grammar books:
http://www.srpski.boom.ru/ - textbook for students of Russian language and literature, in Russian
http://www.seelrc.org/projects/grammars.ptml - BSC grammar (the same as Bolek and Chrystel have mentioned)

Plus several electronic dictionaries. That's it! :-)
