I checked it and the conjugation looks right, although i can't garantee.
This tense is used almost only in literature, or in music, in a situation when you are going to tell a story; but in art in general it's much used, cause it sounds poetical.

Also, the third person of the plural seems to be written equal as to other tense, the normal past.

Explaining the purpose is difficult for me, but i think it has the same purpose of the one you called the 'composto'. An example:

"Até que- deu-se o desmatreio. O trágico não vem a conta-gotas. Apanhara o marido a mulher: com outro, um terceiro..."(gr, Desenredo)

It means much the same as "Havia apanhado o marido a mulher"

The conjugation is correct.

The purpose of the simple tense is exactly the same as the compound one, to refer to a past event that occurs before another action in the past.

Ele nunca tinha comido salmão até visitar aquele restaurante = Ele nunca comera salmão até visitar aquele restaurante (He had never eaten salmon before he visited that restaurant)

Disse-me que não tinha pensado no assunto antes de chegar = Disse-me que não pensara no assunto antes de chegar (He told me he hadn't thought about the issue before he arrived)

In Portugal, the simple tense is seldom used in the spoken language, although it appears in literature and in situations when someone is recounting a past event (e.g. historical documentaries).

In addition, the simple tense can also have the same function as the imperfect subjunctive (compare it to Spanish hubiera, pensara, etc.) in conditional sentences. This usage is, however, even rarer, except for a few set phrases such as "Pudera..." or "Tomara...".

A traditional Portuguese song from the Alentejo comes to mind in which such a construction is used ("Se houvera quem me ensinara, quem aprendia era eu"). Hear it here.
