Language plans: summer 2009

Permanent Linkby Æren on Mon 2009-07-06, 17:28

The last exam being in Thursday (Greek- Herodotus and Plato) the summer has almost begun and so has my head started to think what to do in the language area :)
What is for sure is that I'll try to read Cicero's De Amititia. I feel a bit tired of Portuguese and I am not sure whether I'll do anything with it this season. I've started doubting whether to go to Poland at all next year, so I've put on hold Polish too. I was inspired to deal with Turkish again after and while watching some Turkish tv series, but now when they are over I'm not that concern any more :) I thought over continuing my last summer's language- Hebrew, but still haven't decided it for sure.
What my mind is getting focus at is Tagalog: this autumn it will be 2 years since my getting through the course of "Seaside"... I may try to make...

Polish-1

I must start learning Polish!
After less than a year I'm going to Krakow and it would be really nice if I can understand the language well as well as using it. I think of passing through Assimil's course firstly, although I may attend a crash course here ( in my university) in September.
My first impressions (of previous look-ups and some dialogs I heard from the audio files):
- I don't like the orthography, and probably this has kept me away from that language while I played among the Slavic family.
- From what I heard today I think that it sounds quite cute- especially the soft consonant clusters which i feared that much ^^
- Still haven't looked up the cases, I'll wait until I learn them well for my course of Old Bulgarian.
- Verbs look intriguing :)
- /added later/ The stress falls almost on the same place as in Bulgarian, which makes me feel somehow uneasy, having got used to the Czech accentuation....

Short writings in learning a language

English Permanent Linkby Æren on Sat 2009-03-28, 12:04

When I start learning a language I try to make short notes in it: thoughts, phrases I like or hear, sentences about everyday things, etc. The problem comes when I begin trying to express more complex things like emotions, memories, dreams, feelings. It usually ends up with a paragraphs that no native speaker sees... However, I wonder whether this "method" isn't simply a transformation from one language to another instead of translating, or even a try-to-think-in-the-language. For example, I have caught myself several times translating a certain construction from French in Portuguese, where it does not exist...
I won't even mention the "dictionary"-problem... :ohwell:
